Scripture for Sunday, July 12

Luke 18:18-30

A certain ruler asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honour your father and mother.'" He replied, "I have kept all these since my youth." When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."

But when he heard this, he became sad; for he was very rich. Jesus looked at him and said, "How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."

Those who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?" He replied, "What is impossible for mortals is possible for God."

Then Peter said, "Look, we have left our homes and followed you." And he said to them, "Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not get back very much more in this age, and in the age to come eternal life."

Message Topic: Following Jesus means honestly confronting the idols that hold our hearts, while trusting that God's power—not our own efforts or possessions—is what makes faithful discipleship and eternal life possible.

Music

Listen to one of our newer songs.

Revelation 7:9-12 paints a picture of all the nations of the world standing before the throne of Christ, worshiping together with the angels. This song sounds like something those worshipers might be singing and invites us to join the heavenly worship.

Communion - this Sunday

Communion is a symbolic reenactment of the last supper Jesus shared with his disciples. The bread (gluten-free) and juice symbolize his death, point to his resurrection, and remind us that through his death he defeated the power of sin and death over us. Everyone is free to choose for themselves whether to participate or not.

DIG DEEPER into one of our recent sermons

Who Belongs?

Sunday, July 5, 2026

This sermon invites us to consider what it truly means to be citizens of God's kingdom: not deciding who is worthy to belong, but recognizing that Jesus welcomes all who come to him with humble faith. Just as Jesus welcomed the children whom others tried to turn away, he calls us to lay aside our own barriers and embrace the radical truth that there is room for everyone at his table.

Questions for Reflection (Adults)

  1. The sermon suggests that we sometimes decide who "belongs" and who doesn't. Are there people or groups you find difficult to welcome? Why might that be?
  2. Have there been times when you felt like you didn't belong or weren't welcome? How does Jesus' invitation to "come" speak into that experience?
  3. The sermon challenges us to see Jesus as the one who invites rather than blocks people from coming to him. How can you help remove barriers that keep others from experiencing God's welcome?
  4. What is one practical step you can take this week to reflect the generous, inclusive welcome of Jesus in your home, church, workplace, or community?

Questions for Reflection (Children)

  1. Have you ever felt left out or like you didn't belong? How does it make you feel to know that Jesus always welcomes you?
  2. Is there someone at school, church, or in your neighbourhood who might feel left out? What could you do to help them feel welcome?
  3. Jesus loves everyone—even people we sometimes find difficult to like. Is there someone you could pray for or be kinder to this week?
  4. This week, how can you help someone know that they are welcome and loved by God?
